A passport is very similar to a driver’s license in the United States. It is an globally recognized document, typically used for international travel, verifying who you are and where you’re from. Most countries require a valid passport to enter or exit. All countries issue their own globally recognized passports, the US included. The U. S. Department of State is the division of the government with the authority to grant, issue and verify United States passports.
To apply for a new passport, you’ll need some documentation proving who you are and some time to go apply. Recent changes in the passport regulations require that most applicants must appear in person to apply for one.
US citizens that have never received a passport before should bring a certified birth certificate; current and valid driver’s license, government or military ID; two passport photos that meet the requirements below and fees of $97 plus optional $60 expedited service.
Children under 17 years old are required to hold a passport for most foreign travel. Children under 14 are required to have consent of either both parents’ or guardians’ to apply for a passport. For children born in the United States, a birth certificate, two photos and the fees are all that will be needed. Parents or guardians will need to show proof of citizenship and identity, like a valid passport, birth certificate or driver’s license.
Children or adults born outside the US will need to obtain a foreign birth certificate, report of birth abroad, certification of birth abroad or an adoption decree.
Photos for passports are required to be 2×2 inches. They must be identical, taken within the past 6 months, be in color with the full face, front view showing on a white background. The face must be between 1 and 1 3/8 inches from the chin to the top of the head. Hats, headgear and uniforms except religious dress word daily may not be worn. Prescription glasses (not sunglasses) or wigs worn as part of everyday attire may be worn if they are not obstructive.
To find a passport location near you, visit travel. state. gov and click on “Passports” then “Where to Apply for a Passport”. It typically takes between two and six weeks to receive a passport once it’s been issued. After you received your valid passport, you won’t have to worry about expiration for a full ten years.
Renewal of your passport is easier, quicker and less expensive than the original issuance. You are eligible to renew your passport if you have received it within 15 years, it is not damaged, were older than 16 when it was last issued and still have the same name or documentation for a legal name change.
To renew your passport, you must submit a completed application, two identical passport photos, the fee of $67 and your current, valid, not-mutilated passport. Expedited service is an additional $60. Renewals are usually processed and returned within two or three weeks.
You can check the status of a new or renewed passport by going to travel. state. gov, clicking “Passports” then “Online Application Status Check”. You’ll input your name, date of birth and the last four digits of your social security number.
Electronic passports are in the works in the U. S. The electronic passport, “e-passport”, will be very similar to the current paper passport. The addition of a small integrated computer chip on the back cover and a digital photograph will provide a number of additional benefits. First, the data stored will be much more difficult to penetrate and alter. Second, the digital photo will allow for biometric comparison through facial recognition technology. Additional anti-fraud security features will also be included on the e-passport. Traditional paper passports will still be accepted through their full period of validity.
Regardless of where your travel will be taking you, it is always a good idea to carry your valid, current passport with you. When things go astray, whether in Mexico, Malaysia or anywhere in between, your passport is your ticket to receive protections and rights you are due in that country. Keep it with you as you would your driver’s license in the US.
When are you required to have a passport? If you travel to Afghanistan, Antigua, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Belize, Brazil, Cambodia, Chili, China, Cook Island, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Hungary, Iceland, India, Iraq, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mali, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Panama, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom / Great Britain, Venezuela, Vietnam and the British Virgin Islands, a passport (and possibly a visa) will be required.
For air travel to Aruba, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Grenada, Jamaica, Mexico, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Turks and Caicos Islands as well as the US Virgin Islands beginning in 2007, a passport will be required but hasn’t been in previous years.
Special passports are issued for diplomats or those traveling on behalf of the US government. These are issued for no-fee and are only valid for travel when on official business. Military personnel should contact their installation office. Federal employees should contact their Agency headquarters. Peace Corps officers should contact their travel office and Department of State personnel should contact their Bureau Executive or Personnel Technician.
As you enter foreign countries your passport will be stamped. As you exit, the Customs department of the US will verify where you’ve been, how long you were there and what items you have to declare (for taxation purposes. ) The stamps are often considered the greatest souvenir of an international trip.
When venturing outside of the United States, always keep your passport on your person. Even if you are required to check all of your baggage, keep your passport with you. Should you lose your passport while in a foreign country, contact the Travel Department of the US Government at 202. 955. 0430 or the US Embassy in the country you are in.

The flowers can be found at the Keukenhof, where you can see many tulips, but there are several markets for flowers, too. The two windmills are the most visited Zaanse Schans and Kinderdijk. Both are still active. You can enjoy the beautiful land of tulips and windmills in the countryside and medieval villages and many beaches can be found on the coast. The Netherlands are known for their tolerance and democratic stability, as well. Their laws allow soft drugs - in small quantities for personal use only - use, prostitution, abortion, euthanasia and gay marriage. Curiously, you can buy marijuana legally in the bars. But this does not mean that every country has liberals. It has always been a contrast between prudence and liberalism, especially as a strong Calvinist Protestant tradition there. It is a curiosity that a large part of the country is below sea level, so that the Dutch always fighting the floods. The capital, Amsterdam is known as one of the most romantic cities in Europe and is one of the major destinations of Europe. It'sa good idea to try to vehicles, which is a convenient way to travel, not only for students but all who believe in budget travel. You can easily find a large number of them throughout the city. For example, Atlanta Hotel is in the heart of Amsterdam, the Mi Casa Hotel is a friendly family hotel, the budget in the heart of the city or Borgmann Villa Hotel is just minutes from the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and the Concertgebouw. Sapa Vietnam OverviewLocated in remote northwestern mountains, Sapa is famous for its fine, rugged landscapes and its rich cultural diversity. Sapa is a picturesque village situated in the Hoang Lien Son Mountains near the Chinese border in northwestern Vietnam, known as "the Tonkinese Alps." Sapa and the surrounding region is home to many hill tribes, and the rice terraces, lush vegetation and Fansipan, the highest peak in Vietnam. However, after a recent rise in popularity of Sapa has rapidly become a tourist hot-spot, where money is the drug of choice. Do not be fooled by the way, it is worth exploring the surroundings. Trains from Hanoi SapaFrom is 9 hours by train to Sapa. Vietnam Train operates some of the cars but other cars of the trains are operated by private companies (Tulic, Ratraco, Victoria Hotel, and others). Some of these cars are much better than the standard car. You need to organize in May with a travel agent to get tickets to these cars. Everywhere in the village of Sapa is in place, and the city is small enough that it is not likely to lose. A base map is good enough for most travelers. Ethnic minority villages and sites * Sapa is a charming mountain town surrounded by mountains and rice terraces. Magnificent views of the region can be done (weather permitting) near the hill. One of them was built into a tourist attraction (Ham Rong Resort ") to the different gardens (orchids, Europeans), dance ethnic zones, viewpoints and restaurants. It is a short walk south from the central square and then a few steps. Admission is 30,000 VND. When walking in the mountains, you will meet many hill tribes such as the Red Zao tribe. * Many of the ethnic minorities such as the Hmong and Dao, living in and around Sapa. Many older women in particular are ethnic-style clothing, blankets, etc to sell to tourists. Find a conversation with them can be very rewarding. Tourist trips to the various people around the rice should be prepared with good hiking shoes or boots, a cane and clothes stored in a sealed bag. Depending on the season, the rice fields, which are built on terraces, can be very muddy and slippery. If they are not used shoes, which provides good traction in mud, is likely to keep slipping and falling on your ass, and maybe the tracks. * For the less adventurous, some villages, the village of Lao Chai, is accessible through the jeep, motorcycle and truck. Or walk to Cat Cat ethnic people to walk away from Sapa. You are not likely to lose - everything works on the road to Sapa, which should be marked on maps, and after a while to find a path leading down the hill to the left. The road through the village before climbing another hill to the road again. This tour offers a good opportunity to observe the Vietnamese agriculture and farm animals, and there are excellent views. The reverse can be difficult (it is steep in parts), but again that is the way many local businesses willing to take to get back to Sapa by motorbike. Entry in the villages is 15,000 dong. Shopping in Sapa: "It is possible to change money, travelers checks and get cash advances on credit cards to the largest hotels in Sapa. In addition, there are ATMs on the main street, but do not accept Visa or Mastercard and Maestro. So it may be better with storage on site in cash before going to Sapa. The nearest ATM to accept all major cards Lao Cai. * The custom of nearly identical inexhaustible tourist trinkets available at all times. It seems that the minority of women to sell their trinkets to a trademark in the strain responsible for the Vietnamese market, with little room for negotiation. The prices are very elastic, it's worth comparing prices for the right pair of earrings Montagnard reproduction. * The markets for the sale of clothing, blankets, etc. with colorful traditional designs of the various ethnic minorities in the city. Please note that the dye used to give a blue color stains the fingers (and not just the fingers) - that is why many women who have darkened the hand. When you wash clothes color flow freely. * Marijuana and opium are sold widely, but in silence, for the minority of men and women on the streets of Sapa. If you choose to enjoy, understand that the Vietnamese legal system has little respect for the rights of the accused.

You can set your account and you're ready to travel in South America, a magical place of great beauty where myth and legend continue to walk hand in hand. I traveled 18 months in South America and can give you tips on how to prepare for an unforgettable adventure. All common sense listen to the bad news, and South America has a reputation for being dangerous. I traveled thousands of miles through cities, jungles, islands and mountains. I survived 6 weeks in a care center for street children in the favelas of Salvador de Bahia (Brazil) and the part of life during the carnival. Nothing, I repeat, nothing happened. Use your common sense. Avoid poorly lit streets at night and if your sixth sense is giving you "something wrong" and then take a taxi to your destination. Travel Guide The first thing you need a travel guide. It will be your best companion in your quest for adventure. I recommend Lonely Planet South America on a shoestring to get you started. The book covers everything you need to know to get the most out of your trip and is ideal for planning your trip ahead. I used the guide extensively during my 18 months of adventure. Offer excellent separate travel guides for all countries (apart from using the money to use your own Lonely Planet travel guide to Peru and Brazil). Your guides are the most popular among backpackers. Other guides are The Rough Guide to South America and South America Handbook. Ideally but not practical because you want to travel light, would enjoy an adventure with Lonely Planet and Rough Guide, whether or Manual. Spanish and Portuguese in Brazil The most rewarding part for me is the fact that you can travel in a continent like South America with only 2 languages. Spanish and Portuguese. If you plan to travel for a few weeks, you can invest in a Spanish and / or phrase book in Brazilian Portuguese. English is not very broad and even a basic knowledge of Spanish and / or Portuguese makes the trip more rewarding (they are very willing to help, do not worry, be happy). But if you intend to travel for a few months I recommend you take a language course. Ideally, in a school in South America (I took lessons in Quito, Ecuador, and a teacher for $ 2. 50 / h). Walking shoes South America of nature is overwhelming. You will walk many hours every day. It would be a shame to walk in the footsteps of the Incas with blisters on their feet. My biggest recommendation is to invest in the quality of walking shoes with Gore-Tex. Health Yellow fever vaccination (if you are going to the Amazon Basin), typhoid (which consists of two injections taken 4 weeks), diphtheria, tetanus, polio, cholera (if necessary) kit Medical smallpox: According Does done, you can include: antiseptic cream, aspirin, Lomotil for diarrhea, antibiotics, throat lozenges, ear and eye drops, antacid tablets, motion sickness, drugs , alcohol swabs, water purifier, lip balm, foot powder and groin, thermometer (in one case), surgical tape, assorted sticky plasters, gauze, bandages, butterfly closures, scissors and last but not least important, first aid manual Note: malaria pills are required in the Amazon basin, please be aware that these pills are by to check with your doctor before starting Backpack Travel Gear: Obviously, a large backpack Quality is an imperative. Select the type that has different compartments can be opened separately. Very useful if you need something quickly. Travel as light as possible. A large bag is designed to affect your travel pleasure. Clothing: It depends on where you go. If this is the mountains and jungle, to get quality clothes at home. If this is the beach, buy your shirts (cheap). Camping and Climbing Gear: You can rent equipment for camping and climbing in South America, but the quality is questionable, in May Always check the equipment. Bring your own equipment if possible. I traveled 18 months with my own tent and various camping utensils. Pictures are something personal photograph. Some people just want a break-up plans, others to be published in National Geographic. All my photos were taken with a Nikon F50 camera. Check out the photos on www. Travel South-Amaz. com. He had two zoom, a 35-80 mm. and a 70-210mm. I also dragged a tripod and an excellent flash me. I used FUJI slides (100 ASA) but you probably need 200 to 400 ASA if you are going to the jungle. A polarizing filter improves color on sunny days. Conclusion South America will welcome you with open arms. It is nature, people and history is overwhelming. With the right preparation and mind you are ready for an unforgettable adventure
